from THE AQUARIUM

I woke up one morning to Father pouring the aquarium onto the front lawn. We were going on vacation and had no one willing to take care of it.

All those thrashing technicoloured terrors, their fins parched leaves, sun-kissed and life-leeched. I watched the filtered water dampen the grass, wondered if it would grow back greener.

An ant, abdomen bulky and murky, scurried over a static neon tetra as if it was merely another obstacle in its path—and why shouldn’t the ant think of it as such.

Mother had told me my friends will grow into flowers, though I saw none on our return. We had no one willing to take care of our front lawn.
