Hobo Alphabet 23 – Authorities Here are Alert
Read to me, she said.
He understood
read me and put
his hands on
her eyes. He heard
there was an alphabet
of dots
for the blind. Like
insects under skin. He wished;
he’d give
his sight right
now to read her
freckled skin.
He took her
to the picture show
once, watched her
eat candied almonds
the color of wild
flowers in a field
on screen
there was black
and white but
there was techni-
color under
his fingers
and the taste of
sugar in his empty
mouth.
