Lorraine Caputo is a documentary poet, translator and travel writer. Her works appear in over 100 journals in Canada, the US, Latin America, Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa; 11 chapbooks of poetry – including Caribbean Nights (Red Bird Chapbooks, 2014) and the upcoming Notes from the Patagonia (dancing girl press, 2017), five audio recordings and 17 anthologies. She also pens travel pieces, with stories appearing in the anthologies Drive: Women's True Stories from the Open Road (Seal Press, 2002) and Far Flung and Foreign (Lowestoft Chronicle Press, 2012), and travel guidebooks. In March 2011, the Parliamentary Poet Laureate of Canada chose her verse as poem of the month. She has done over 200 literary readings, from Alaska to the Patagonia. For more than two decades, Ms Caputo has been journeying through Latin America, listening to the voices of the pueblos and Earth. Against royal-blue ocean
pale dunes shift around
these mounds of fractured red rocks
polished by sand
& sea & wind
The wind rises
with the incoming tide
the rocks slowly immerse
shallow waves breaking
In the broken shade
of a grass shelter
I watch black scarabs
leaving even rows
of six-footed prints
The sand imprints
fine rasps on my
winter-pale skin, imbeds in my
wild, ocean-salted hair
